Facebook Graph Search: Good, Bad and The Ugly

Facebook announced a radical new search mechanism two months back, called “Facebook Graph Search”. As per FB, “Graph Search is a new way for you to find people, photos, places and interests that are most relevant to you on Facebook”.

What exactly is Graph Search?

It is an improvement to FB’s “advanced search” option which will allow you to do a deeper social search and find people, places, photos and things based on location, dates, interests, etc. within Facebook.

How to Get it?

It’s still in the beta phase and been rolled out only to a handful of users. If you would like to get your hands dirty and play with it before the final delivery, you can join the queue.

So, the Good?

Advanced searching allows you to find out what exactly you want to know from vast amount of social data – be it a restaurant recommendation, a movie review, or meeting new people with common interests. FB uses one’s Likes, Check-ins ,Photos etc to figure this out. Although Likes and check-ins may not necessarily indicate if a person is a true patron of the place, along with comments and other information associated with the place, this could be THE search of the future.

There is bad too!

With the introduction of Facebook Graph Search, people can be searched based on their “Likes“. Since not all users monitor their likes and not all Likes are intentional (could be victim of a Click Jacking or over curiosity 😉 ) and might have gone unnoticed till now. Without proper privacy settings in place, this may lead to humiliation. For example consider the following searches.

Even Worse,The Ugly!

Sadly Graph search opens up doors to many anti social elements too. Facebook is already a realm for stalkers, who got a new weapon to their arsenal with graph search. With so many people unaware of the privacy settings and the possible impact of posting personal details in web openly, a search like “Single women who live nearby and who are interested in men and like Getting Drunk” would give many preys to the predator.

“Single women who live nearby and who are interested in men and like Getting Drunk”

Graph Search can be shown as yet another reason one needs to use discretion in sharing personal information/other sensitive date on a social forum.

Note: This post is inspired from an interesting blog found here. The last picture has been taken from the same place, all others are the results of my own searches.
